EMBARC - Ethnic Minority Business Advice & Research Campaign

The EMBARC project is a KBVT initiative supported by the Commission for Racial Equality to address gaps in Entrepreneurial Development, Awareness, and Advocacy among African and Caribbean people.

The overall objective of the project is to research and create a delivery model of entrepreneurship for people of varying educational levels that will:

  2. create awareness of joint venture and business development as viable career options;
  3. develop entrepreneurial characteristics/traits;  and
  4. increase business start-up and success by black business owners.

EMBARC operates on the premise that making change happen means making people change.  And making people change means getting people to be responsible for their own performance.   Accordingly, we seek to help black people:

  1. identify the obstacles that prevent them from achieving great performance and success in business;
  2. identify who owns or controls those obstacles; and
  3. identify the actions they can take to eliminate obstacles.

By linking the employment needs of local black people with the economic development opportunities created by the Milton Keynes/South Midlands expansion plans, EMBARC provides a win-win situation for the whole county.  Indeed, we are prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to provide this group with access to the information and skills necessary to start and grow highly successful businesses.

Here is your opportunity to influence and help guide the way Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Support is delivered within the county. Your input and feedback is very important to us. If you want to start a business, go to the Pre-start questionnaire. Already in business and want to expand further, go to the Existing Business Questionnaire. Please help us to help you!

Our specific aims over the next year are to:

  1. improve the start-up, survival and growth rates of black owned small and medium sized enterprises by providing access to accurate, timely and relevant information, support and advice;
  2. enable clients to make well-informed business decisions in a competitive environment; and
  3. encourage business success through sound business planning, market research and the use of strategic business information.

The challenges are huge and there is much work to be done.  Black people, more than any other racial group, are less likely to own and manage their own business.  Still, we act against the odds in support of a deeply held belief that black people are ready for change, they just need focus and direction.  In fact, what many black people really want is a chance to talk about their abilities and possibilities. They want someone to listen.  We don’t think they expect us to have all the answers, but they expect, and really want, to have that dialogue.  EMBARC provides that safe mental place.

Will you take the journey with us?  Together, we create the environment that brings to the surface local people’s deep desire to be great performers.  Click, call or come in.  We would really like to hear from you.
